Change You Can Believe In!

Change Who Can Believe In?

Can we all agree that change and a commitment to change means nothing without some definition of what changes are envisioned? Saying the change will be “for the good” or “positive” is of no help. Most people rarely make changes they think are bad.

So what does Senator Obama mean when he says he is about change and that he is an agent of change? What kind of change has he accomplished in the past?

Here are a few observations:

He was definitely committed to taking public financing and restricting the spending of his campaign. Then, when the money was right for him, HE CHANGED his position and will now run the most expensive campaign in the history of this country.

He was in favor of unconditional talks with Iran. Then when he realized what a ridiculous idea that was, HE CHANGED his mind and now favors talks with preconditions.

He insisted on a definite “timeline” for withdrawal in Iraq. Then when the tide changed and he realized some of the consequences of that foolish position, HE CHANGED his agenda to include a “refined” strategy for reduction in force following the advice of commanders on the ground.

He was going to filibuster the FISA Bill until he realized the citizens would not forgive him for risking their security. Predictably, HE CHANGED his mind and voted for the bill.

He stated he supported the renegotiation of NAFTA. Now, HE CHANGED and does not want to renegotiate NAFTA.

He was opposed to welfare reform. Feeling the political winds blowing, HE CHANGED his position there, also.

The most troubling thing about these changes is that they do not appear to be based on any growth in his political views. Rather, they seem as flexible as an Olympic gymnast. So, we shouldn’t be surprised if he changes again.

One thing seems clear, however. When he says he is about change and committed to change, he means it . . . until he changes.
